What 𝓭 means
It is a separate d whose meaning comes from the formula. Mathematical notation uses different letter styles to distinguish symbols. Some script-style letters, such as ℋ (a script capital H), were encoded individually before fuller script alphabets like the one containing 𝓭. This d has no universal referent; each author assigns it in context.
Why does 𝓭 sometimes become plain d?
A text-cleanup step called NFKC can turn it back into ordinary d. NFKC is a compatibility-normalization form: text-processing software can reduce math-style letters to their basic Latin forms. That can make text easier to compare, but it removes a distinction a formula may rely on. The script curves can also vary by font; the character carries a mathematical style, not one fixed drawing.

1Why does 𝓭 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
