What 𝓯 means
Type 1D4EF, then press Alt+X.
As of 2026-09-28, Word for Windows accepts this hexadecimal value followed by Alt+X. It inserts a bold-script math letter as its own character, not an ordinary f with a font effect. If other hexadecimal digits touch the code on the left, select only 1D4EF before using the shortcut.
What does 𝓯 mean in math?
It marks a separate symbol; the formula supplies its meaning.
Read it as the lowercase letter f first. Bold script is a mathematical type style: the author can use it to keep this symbol distinct from plain f. It does not mean “function” by itself; the equation tells you what the letter stands for.
Mathematical publishers already used type styles to distinguish symbols when the STIX project proposed a full encoded alphabet in 1999. Earlier Unicode included a smaller set of script-like letter symbols; the proposal’s expanded alphabets let plain text preserve distinctions that a font alone would lose.
Why does 𝓯 look different across screens?
The character stays the same; its font determines the strokes.
Unicode’s chart drawing is an example, not a mandatory design. Different math fonts can draw the script f differently; when no available font includes it, a device may show a missing-character box instead.

1Why does 𝓯 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
