What 𝛎 means
The equation’s definition gives this nu its exact meaning.
Bold type can set one variable apart from another; some vector traditions use bold Greek letters for vectors. This style carries a distinction, but not a universal value for nu.
Greek nu belongs to an older alphabetic lineage: it descends from Phoenician nun 𐤍. The earliest known Greek inscription dates to about 740 BCE. Much later, Gibbs used small Greek letters for vectors in 1881; Wilson’s 1901 textbook influentially used bold type for vectors and ordinary type for scalars. Unicode’s separate mathematical alphabets let plain-text formulas preserve such distinctions.
Why can bold nu become plain nu?
Compatibility normalization removes its mathematical style.
The font determines the exact strokes, but Unicode stores mathematical alphabets separately so plain-text equations can keep their distinctions. NFKC and NFKD normalization fold these characters to ordinary Greek letters, so a formula that relies on boldness can lose a variable distinction.

1Does bold nu mean a vector?
Sometimes. Bold letters are used for vectors in some mathematical conventions, but bold can mark other distinctions too; the surrounding definition decides.
