What 𝛼 means
Its formula defines the value, and its style can separate variables. In one equation, letters with the same Greek base can name different quantities when their mathematical styles differ. Encoding the italic style as part of the character lets plain text preserve that distinction instead of relying only on appearance.
The letter’s ancestry is much older: Greek alpha adapted Phoenician aleph, a consonant sign, into a vowel letter. The oldest known inscription written in Greek letters dates to about 740 BCE. Much later, in 1999, a scientific and technical publishing project proposed encoding mathematical letter styles separately so plain-text equations could preserve distinctions between variables.

Questions people ask
2Can a math editor display α as 𝛼?
Yes. Math markup can render a one-letter α in italic while the underlying text remains plain α. The shape alone may not tell you whether the source contains this exact Unicode character.
Will NFKC change 𝛼 to α?
Yes. NFKC maps 𝛼 to ordinary Greek α, removing the mathematical style distinction. Avoid that transformation when the style separates variables.
