Mathematical Italic Small Beta

740/996

𝛽 is the italic beta symbol used in mathematics, often as a beta variable; the formula defines its role. Its slant can mark it as a distinct symbol rather than decoration. The Greek letter descends from Phoenician bet, while this dedicated italic form was encoded to keep mathematical distinctions intact in plain text.

What 𝛽 means

It names a variable; the surrounding formula tells you which one.

Greek letters give equations more symbols when Latin letters are already in use. This beta variable can sit beside plain β with a different definition. If someone sends 𝛽 alone, ask for its equation or definition: the letter by itself does not identify a quantity.

Where did the beta letter come from?

The letter is ancient; its mathematical style serves a separate purpose.

Phoenician bet was a consonant letter in an ancient Mediterranean alphabet; its name means “house.” House-shaped signs proposed as ancestors of that alphabet are dated to the early second millennium BCE. Greeks adapted Phoenician letters for Greek, and by about 725 BCE their alphabet was already used casually, including in jokes.

In Ancient Greek, beta represented /b/; in Modern Greek, β represents /v/. The mathematical italic form preserves letter-style distinctions in plain-text formulas, where different styles can mark different variables.

Technical and neutral: italic style marks a mathematical distinction.

Compatibility normalization (a kind of text cleanup) can turn 𝛽 into plain β, erasing its mathematical style.

Why does 𝛽 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
