What 𝛾 means
It is Greek gamma in mathematical italics, not a fixed constant.
Mathematical notation uses letter styles to distinguish symbols, so 𝛾 can stand for a different quantity from plain γ. The author defines its meaning in each formula.
Unicode encodes math styles as separate characters so plain text can keep the distinction. An equation editor can instead apply italic styling to ordinary γ without changing its character.
Use it when your source writes gamma in mathematical italics.
NFKC can fold 𝛾 to plain γ, erasing the distinction.

1Why does 𝛾 turn into γ?
NFKC and NFKD compatibility normalization can fold mathematical font variants to the underlying Greek letter. If the italic form distinguishes symbols in your formula, that processing erases useful notation.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
