Mathematical Right White Tortoise Shell Bracket

46/48

⟭ is a closing bracket for mathematics: the right half of the pair ⟬…⟭, called a white (hollow, double-lined) tortoise shell bracket because its flattened, angled outline recalls a turtle's shell. Mathematicians use it as an extra kind of bracket when ( ), [ ] and { } are already taken. It looks like the Chinese–Japanese bracket 〙 but is a separate character.

What ⟭ means

It closes an expression opened by ⟬.

Mathematics runs out of bracket shapes quickly. When round, square and curly brackets already mean something in a text, an author can pick a distinct pair such as ⟬…⟭ to mark a special grouping, an operator or a piece of notation of their own. The meaning is whatever the author defines; the bracket only says where the group starts and ends.

The pair reached Unicode in 2006 through a proposal that found them in STIX, a large collection of mathematical characters assembled for scientific publishing, which listed the German publisher of mathematical fonts ISO TECH as their source. Earlier rounds of math additions had missed them.

Is ⟭ the same as 〙 or 〕?

No. They look alike but are different characters.

〙 and 〕 are punctuation of Chinese, Japanese and Korean text, drawn inside a full-width square cell with blank space beside the stroke. ⟭ is the mathematical version: no built-in side space, and math typesetting can stretch it to the height of the expression. Use ⟭ in formulas and the CJK brackets in East Asian text, because mixing them breaks search and spacing.

Questions people ask

2

What does ⟬x⟭ mean?

It depends on the author's own definition. The pair is a spare bracket shape, and each paper says what it groups or denotes.

Why is it called white?

Unicode calls hollow, outlined shapes white and filled ones black. ⟭ is drawn with a double outline.
