What does 𝒳 mean in math?
It is a script-style X that can mark a distinct mathematical object.
Mathematical notation treats some letter styles as separate alphabets, so 𝒳 can name a different object from ordinary X. Its meaning is set locally: look for the document’s symbol list or first definition.
In one machine-learning primer, 𝒳 names the input space: the set of values a model may accept.
Is 𝒳 just a fancy X?
No: its script style can carry a separate mathematical meaning.
In 1999, a proposal to Unicode, the shared system computers use to identify characters, reported that mathematical script letters were already used in scientific publishing. It argued that letter style could change mathematical meaning, so plain text should preserve and search variants separately. The proposal filled out alphabets that older script-like Unicode characters covered only in part.
A Unicode cleanup step called NFKC can reduce 𝒳 to ordinary X. That can help a search match styles loosely, but it erases the distinction when a formula depends on it.
In formulas, 𝒳 signals a distinct math-style letter; for decorative prose, ordinary text formatting is clearer.
Do not treat it as plain X in a formula if the author distinguishes them; normalization can erase the style.

1Why does 𝒳 look different across fonts?
Font-dependent. Unicode identifies the script X but does not prescribe one exact drawing; mathematical fonts can give the calligraphic alphabet noticeably different shapes.
