What 𝋤 means
Four dots, each worth one.
Maya numerals in the Long Count calendar stack vertically: days at the bottom, then 20-day units, then 360-day years.
Where did dot-and-bar numerals begin?
A shared Mesoamerican counting tradition.
A clay figurine from La Blanca, Guatemala, dated about 650–600 BCE, bears ordered dots that scholars interpret as possible numerals. From about 600 BCE to 900 CE, Maya, Zapotec, and Epi-Olmec/Isthmian scribes used bar-and-dot notation. After about AD 1300, Mixtec and Aztec records used a separate dot-only system for 1–13.
