What 𑘎 means
Modi ka is k plus its built-in vowel a, read “ka.”
Why was Modi written this way?
Its rounded forms helped scribes write with fewer pen lifts.
Modi took shape for Marathi administration in the 16th century. Tradition credits Hemadri or Balaji Avaji; its earliest surviving document dates to the early 17th century. Under sultanates—regional kingdoms ruled by sultans—and Maratha rulers, scribes used it for letters and tax records. In the 19th century, Marathi print shifted to Balbodh, a Devanagari writing style. Modi was discontinued in the 1950s and later became a Maratha heritage symbol.
