What 𑘬 means
Choose the ṣa key in a Modi-capable input method. A regular Latin keyboard has no universal shortcut for this character.
What sound does 𑘬 represent?
It is the Modi-script consonant ssa, transliterated ṣa. It represents a retroflex hiss: the tongue tip curls slightly back as air passes. Like other Modi consonants, 𑘬 carries an unwritten a by default; a following virama, the sign that cancels that vowel, removes it. In transliteration, it corresponds to Devanagari ष.
Modi belongs to the Brahmi-based Nagari script family and was shaped from a Devanagari model for continuous handwriting. Historical accounts place Modi use in the fifteenth century; Unicode describes its emergence as an administrative script in the sixteenth century, with its earliest surviving document from the early seventeenth century.
Scribes used Modi for royal orders, letters, revenue records, accounts, and other paperwork. The Balbodh form of Devanagari served literary and sacred writing. In the nineteenth century, print favored Balbodh; Modi was formally discontinued for Marathi by the 1950s. Later, it found new roles in archives, regional history, and revival.
It marks Modi-script text and carries an archival or scholarly register.
When the surrounding text is Modi, do not substitute Devanagari ष; matching transliteration does not make them interchangeable.

1Questions people ask
1Why does 𑘬 show as a box?
The font or text-shaping engine lacks Modi support. A font must contain Modi glyphs, and the rendering software must shape the script; a box indicates a display gap, not a different character.
