What 𑘾 means

It marks a word-final variant of the Sanskrit r or s sound.

Visarga is a Sanskrit spelling mark: it signals a changed form of the r or s sound at a word’s end. It is related in function to Devanagari visarga ः, but it belongs to a different script.

One legend says Modi was brought to India from Sri Lanka by Hemadri Pandit, minister to Yadava king Ramachandra; another credits its creation to Balaji Avaji, an official under Maratha ruler Shivaji. Unicode says these accounts are hard to verify. It describes Modi as derived from the Nagari script family and adapted for continuous writing. A 2023 public lecture described Modi as cursive and noted renewed interest in the script.

What was Modi writing used for?

It carried records, letters, and other everyday writing.

Modi was used mainly for Marathi, including official correspondence and revenue or land records; it also appeared in education, newspapers, diaries, and personal papers. Marathi readers used two scripts in different settings: Modi for routine records, and Balbodh (the Devanagari form) more for literary and sacred texts.

A lecture summary places Modi use in the 15th century; Unicode describes it emerging as an administrative system in the 16th century. The Marathas adopted it officially in the 17th century, and the earliest surviving document dates to the early 17th century. Printing began in the early 19th century after Charles Wilkins cut its first metal type in Calcutta. In the 19th century, print favored Balbodh because it could represent more Marathi speech sounds. In the 1950s, Modi was formally discontinued as Marathi’s standard script.

Specialist and historical: it belongs to Sanskrit spelling in Modi-script texts, rather than ordinary punctuation.

Treating it as a colon loses the Sanskrit word-ending information.
