This is a nonspacing mark, so a Modi-capable font must position it against a base letter. Without Modi font support, it may appear detached or misplaced.
What does the Modi nasal mark do?
It marks nasalization in Modi writing.
Nasalization means that a sound has a nasal quality. Read the mark with its preceding Modi letter or syllable, not by itself.
Modi was built for quick writing
Modi grew out of the Nagari writing tradition, which also includes Devanagari, and emerged as an administrative script in the 16th century. The earliest surviving Modi document dates from the early 17th century.
Bent, connected forms helped scribes write continuously with fewer pen lifts, including in handwritten royal orders. The Marathas adopted Modi as an official script in the 17th century. It was used for Marathi as well as Hindi, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Persian, Tamil, and Telugu; later it also appeared in education, journalism, and everyday writing. Formal use was discontinued in the 1950s.
Modi now appears in preservation work. A 2025 study discussed handwritten records and OCR, software that recognizes text in scanned documents.

2Questions people ask
2Can 𑘽 stand alone?
No. It is a combining mark that modifies its Modi base instead of forming a letter on its own.
Why can 𑘽 look detached?
It needs a Modi base and a font that can position the mark. Missing Modi font support or a shaping problem can leave it out of place.
