What 𑘒 means
It represents the nasal sound at the end of “sing.” By itself, the letter is conventionally transliterated ṅa because Modi consonants carry an inherent “a” vowel. A vowel sign changes that syllable; a virama mark suppresses the vowel.
Modi developed from the older Nagari script tradition as a flowing hand for continuous writing; fewer pen lifts helped scribes write records quickly. Its administrative role emerged in the 16th century, and the earliest surviving Modi document dates to the early 17th century.
Maratha rulers in western India adopted Modi for official use in the 17th century. It served correspondence, land and administrative records, schooling, journalism, and personal papers. Printing began in the early 19th century, but print technology favored Balbodh, a more readable form of Devanagari used for Marathi. From the 1950s, Devanagari became Marathi’s standard, and Modi shifted from routine administration toward archival and heritage use linked to Maratha history and regional identity.
Why does Modi text change shape?
Its font may reshape nearby combinations; 𑘒 keeps its basic shape. Modi fonts use contextual forms and ligatures for many consonant-vowel or consonant-consonant combinations. The encoding proposal lists 𑘒 among consonants that keep their basic shape in every consonant-vowel combination, so a neighboring sign may change without changing this letter.
Formal and archival: it points to Modi writing, Marathi documents, or script study.
