What ᵍ means
In UPA, ᵍ marks a very short or transitional g element. The Uralic Phonetic Alphabet records how Uralic languages, including Finnish and Hungarian, are pronounced; raised letters mark especially brief sounds or transitions. E. N. Setälä proposed the system in 1901.
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) uses ˠ for velarization: pronouncing a consonant with the back of the tongue raised. In text, ᵍ is its own phonetic character, not formatting that raises an ordinary g. The separate modifier ᶢ is not a substitute.

Questions people ask
1Why does ᵍ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
