Kievan Eighth Note, Stem Up

222/225

Kievan square notation uses 𝇧 for an eighth note with its stem pointing up. This five-line system is used for East Slavic church chant; staff position supplies the pitch, which this character alone cannot encode. If it arrives by itself, read it as a notation example or a font check.

Text symbol

What 𝇧 means

It marks an eighth-note event and fixes the stem upward.

It belongs on the five-line staff used in Kievan notation. Staff position supplies the pitch; the character itself gives the note value and stem direction, not the score’s full layout.

Kievan notation grew from East Slavic church-music practice. Unicode dates its origins to the 1500s and says the first books using it appeared in 1772; Ukrainian music history dates development of its staff system from the mid-16th to the end of the 17th century, as polyphonic singing called for more precise notation. Earlier Znamenny chant used neumes—melodic signs written without a staff.

What does it mean when someone sends it?

Read it as a notation example or a font check.

By itself, the character contributes a note sign. The surrounding message tells you whether the sender is identifying it, discussing Kievan chant, or checking font support.

Russian Orthodox chantbooks use Kievan notation; regional variants also appear in Carpatho-Russian Prostopinje chantbooks, a type of church chant. Digital editions use the same characters for inline notation references and music engraving.

Why does 𝇧 show as a box?

The active font probably lacks this Kievan musical glyph.

A font may include ordinary Western notes but lack Kievan symbols, whose shapes were encoded separately. If this sign appears as a box, select a font with Kievan musical-symbol coverage; the box is a display failure, not a different note.

Specialist notation: it points to Kievan chant scores or music typesetting.

Why does 𝇧 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
