What 𝅙 means
A placeholder that keeps score structure without printing a head.
Use it when encoded score data needs a note's slot but no visible head: Unicode documents it as an anchor for a combining flag and as the stemless end of an open beam (the thick line joining short notes).
The encoded character entered Unicode 3.1 (2001). The Musical Symbols block builds on Western notation and ancestors like mensural (medieval rhythm) and plainsong (chant) writing; the null form marks position, not a pitch to play.
Why does it look empty?
Its blank look is a rendering consequence, not missing data.
Music-aware renderers attach a stem or flag at its position; plain text may draw it as nothing, though Unicode recommends a dotted-box fallback. A 2020 Noto Music issue reported it rendering as a space, so a blank display does not mean the character was deleted.
Technical and specialist: it belongs in score data or a music-aware font.
A blank does not mean a rest; it means the notehead is intentionally absent.

2Questions people ask
3Is null notehead the same as void notehead?
No. A void notehead is a visible head used in built-up notes; null holds the position without drawing one.
Does null notehead mean a rest?
No. A rest marks silence; this supplies a structural position for notation like a beam or flag.
Why is null notehead invisible?
Deliberately: it is a position marker, not a printed mark. A renderer can still attach a stem or flag; fallback fonts may show a dotted box.
