What ⊼ means
NAND means “not both”: false only when both inputs are true.
For A and B, A ⊼ B is false only when both are true, and true for every other pairing. A NAND gate checks whether both inputs are true, then flips that result. NAND gates can implement any Boolean function.
Peirce described a logic built from one operation in an 1880 manuscript; Sheffer published a related Boolean-algebra system in 1913. Boolean algebra is math with true and false values. Sheffer's vertical-bar notation is the Sheffer stroke; the Peirce arrow is related NOR, true only when neither input is true.
Technical notation for Boolean logic and circuit design.
NAND is not NOR: false only for two true inputs.
Questions people ask
1Why does ⊼ show as a box?
Font support. A font without this text glyph may show a missing-glyph box or fallback; its logic is unchanged.
How to type ⊼
⊼\22BCCodes and encoding1 code points
A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
