What 𑐮 means
It is the Newa consonant la, not a standalone word.
In a Newa syllable, the Newa la 𑐮 is the l sound plus the default vowel. A dependent vowel sign changes that vowel; 𑑂 virama removes it or helps build a conjunct. The same base therefore reads differently by its neighbors.
The script's practical job was to write Newar/Nepal Bhasa and Sanskrit in records and manuscripts. It emerged in the 10th century from Brahmi through Gupta/Kutila, related to Bengali, Oriya, and Tirhuta, and influenced by Devanagari. The proposal cites its first recorded use: a 908 CE Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra manuscript. Bhujimol developed around 1042; Ranjana appeared in Nepal in 1099 in Mahayana Buddhist texts. Both are related Newar traditions, not alternate forms of 𑐮. After 1769 use declined; a 1905 ban ended in 1951. As of September 15, 2026, sources date the script's social life, not a separate first appearance for 𑐮.
Why does 𑐮 render differently?
Its visible form depends on the font and its surrounding marks.
Newa has flat-headed and curve-headed forms. Vowel signs can reshape a consonant; in conjuncts, virama may hide inside a ligature or stay visible below the base when the font lacks that glyph. A box is a missing-font problem, not a different letter.
Ordinary inside Newa text; isolated, it is a letter sample, not a mood or emoji.
Do not send it alone expecting readers to infer a word.

2Is 𑐮 an emoji?
No. It is text in the Newa script, so font support and shaping determine its appearance.
Why does 𑐮 show as a box?
It means the font lacks a Newa glyph. Choose a Newa font such as Noto Sans Newa; the box is not a different letter.
