What 𑐄 means
It writes a short u sound at the start of a syllable.
That makes it an independent vowel letter; a dependent vowel sign joins a consonant when u follows it.
How did Newa writing develop?
It grew through a long Brahmi-based writing tradition in the Kathmandu Valley.
Inscriptions, coins, manuscripts, and books show Newa writing in use from at least the tenth century CE. It served to write Nepal Bhasa, the Newar language, as well as Sanskrit and Nepali in administrative, literary, and religious records.
After Newa dynasties fell, use declined; a ban from 1905–1951 narrowed public transmission further. Prachalit, Ranjana, and Bhujimol are related Newa writing styles: Ranjana is associated with ornate religious writing, Prachalit became a basis for standard spelling, and Bhujimol represents an older form.
Used in Newa writing, transcription, type design, and heritage work.
Drift: As of 2026, manuscript digitization and new type design are helping bring Newa writing into digital use. (as of as of 2026)
