NKo Letter Ba

20/62

ߓ is the N’Ko letter ba: it writes a b consonant inside words, not a complete message. Read it with the surrounding N’Ko text. N’Ko’s history ties it to Manding-language literacy and cultural identity.

Text symbol

What ߓ means

It is a letter that spells a b sound.

Called ba (roughly “bah”), ߓ writes the consonant b in N’Ko words, like the b at the start of “book.” Alone, it is a sound fragment, not a complete word to translate.

Solomana Kanté designed N’Ko as an alphabet for Manding languages because Arabic and Latin spelling did not fit their sounds well. It runs right to left and marks tone. Accounts describe different milestones: a community history dates completion to 14 April 1947; a historical account places its first appearance in Bingerville on 14 April 1949, while noting that date compresses a longer process.

Someone sent me ߓ — what does it mean?

Read it as a fragment until a word supplies context.

A lone ߓ does not identify a complete word; read the surrounding N’Ko text before translating it.

Ajami—the tradition of writing West African languages with Arabic script—is part of this history. Kanté learned Qur’anic Arabic and tried Arabic letters before designing a distinct alphabet. Fieldwork published in 1997 records cultural pride as a reason to learn N’Ko; a 2019 study describes kángbɛ (“clear language”) as classroom work linking Manding dialects and identity. N’Ko writing can carry literacy and cultural-identity context that this single letter cannot establish.

How do I type ߓ?

On one standard layout, the apostrophe key types ߓ.

MediaWiki’s documented standard N’Ko QWERTY layout maps the apostrophe key (') to ߓ; other N’Ko layouts may assign it elsewhere.

Questions people ask

2

Is ߓ an Arabic letter?

No. N’Ko is a distinct alphabet for Manding languages. It reads right to left and joins letters using writing conventions also familiar from Arabic script.

Why does ߓ look different in a word?

It can join neighboring N’Ko letters, and a text renderer chooses a form for its position. Without N’Ko support, a font may show a missing-glyph box or fail to join the letters.
