What ߔ means
ߔ represents the p consonant in N’Ko.
The consonant chart calls it “pa,” a teaching name with an added “a”; ߔ alone is not a whole syllable. In an N’Ko word, the vowel has its own letter, while tone or nasalization marks attach to that vowel.
Wikimedia’s N’Ko QWERTY layout, documented in 2024, maps ߔ to q; Latin p produces a different letter.
Why was N’Ko created?
Kantè created N’Ko as a new alphabet in 1949. ߔ entered writing with it. Kantè had tried Arabic-based spelling in 1945 and Latin spelling in 1948; neither represented Manding tones well. The new alphabet also answered claims that African languages had no writing or grammar.
Manding-speaking Muslims used Ajami—local-language writing in Arabic script—in the setting of Quranic study. Kantè came from that scholarly world but made N’Ko a separate alphabet; he wrote in it about Islam, history, medicine, and law.
Across West Africa, N’Ko grew into a shared literary register, or written standard, for Bamanan, Maninka, Jula, and Mandinka. Traders, Quranic schools, publishing, broadcasting, and education carried it across borders. Latin-based spellings are another route for writing related Manding languages; ߔ belongs to N’Ko spelling.
Why does ߔ change shape in words or fonts?
The same letter can be joined or detached. Cursive N’Ko joins letters inside words; non-cursive styles keep them apart, especially in headings. In a word, ߔ may have a longer baseline form without becoming another character.
N’Ko runs right to left. A box usually points to missing N’Ko font support; a detached ߔ may instead be a valid non-cursive form.
