What 𛇌 means
It writes the local syllable iou13. Nüshu records local Chinese speech in Jiangyong, Hunan; its signs draw on Chinese characters and mostly spell syllables, not words. iou13 is a pronunciation guide, not a translation.
Why did women use Nüshu?
It let women write speech many could not write with Chinese characters. Traditionally, Nüshu appears in songs, letters, and “third-day letters”—wedding wish booklets from the bride’s pledged friends, given three days after the ceremony. The earliest known county record dates to 1821–1850; a wedding booklet from 1854 also survives. A local legend credits the Nine-Jin Girl with creating Nüshu to reach distant friends, but scholars dispute its deeper origin. China listed Nüshu customs as national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

1Why does 𛇌 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
