Why did women in Jiangyong use Nüshu?
It let Jiangyong women write their dialect and share everyday texts.
Nüshu (“women’s writing”) developed in Jiangyong County, Hunan, adapting Chinese characters to local speech. Its oldest known artifact is a coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state in China (1851–1864); the earliest documentary record is a 1933 Hunan survey. Historically, women wrote songs and sworn-sister letters, plus “third-day” wedding messages for brides three days after marriage, on fans or cloth. Since 2003, Jiangyong workshops have helped attract learners; China listed Nüshu as national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.
