What 𛉠 means
It carries the Nüshu reading lai35. The digits mark its pitch pattern; surrounding words reveal the local word meant.
Why and when was Nüshu used?
It helped women in Jiangyong write their local speech. Nüshu (women’s writing) adapted Chinese character forms mainly to represent syllables. With limited access to Chinese literacy, women learned it through work and song, writing letters, wedding booklets, laments, and prayers. A Taiping-era coin (1851–64) bears Nüshu; the earliest known description dates to 1931. Hu Yuxiu’s inventor legend is unverified. By 2025, Unicode described preservation efforts.
