nushu character-1b278

Nüshu syllable sign

265/396

𛉸 is a Nüshu sign for a syllable in the Jiangyong dialect of Hunan, China. A correspondence list gives the representative reading neng35 and pairs it with 念, 点 and 典, so the sentence decides which word is meant. Women used Nüshu for letters, songs and life stories.

What 𛉸 means

It marks a local syllable, not one fixed Chinese word. A Nüshu correspondence list records its representative Jiangyong reading as neng35 and pairs the sign with 念, 点 and 典. The links are phonetic, not a shared meaning; surrounding words identify the intended one.

What did Jiangyong women write with Nüshu?

They wrote letters, life histories, songs and wedding gifts. Women with little access to formal schooling passed the script from mothers to daughters and among sworn sisters—close female friends. They wrote letters, autobiographies, songs and riddles, and sanzhaoshu (“third-day letters”), books of good wishes delivered to a bride three days after marriage. Women also embroidered Nüshu characters on clothes, handkerchiefs and belts, and sang verses together while sewing.

How old is Nüshu, and where did it come from?

It adapted Chinese regular-script forms to write local Jiangyong speech. Regular script is the standard style of Chinese characters. Some researchers tentatively date inherited manuscripts to China's late Ming or early Qing dynasties, around the 1600s. One material trace is an uncast coin design from the Taiping Rebellion, China's civil war of the 1850s; its line says women everywhere are one family. A county note mentions Nüshu in 1931. Research and media brought it wider attention from the 1980s; China recognized Nüshu customs as intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

Why does 𛉸 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Nushu block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
