nushu character-1b29c

Nüshu Character 1B29C

301/396

𛊜 records the Jiangyong Nüshu reading sau35; it has no single fixed English translation. Women used Nüshu to write local speech in letters, songs, and wedding messages. The same syllable can stand for words as different as “reduce” and “umbrella,” so the surrounding line does the deciding.

What 𛊜 means

Its listed Jiangyong reading is sau35; the sentence supplies the word.

Nüshu is a syllabic script: a character usually represents a spoken syllable, not one specific word. This character's reading is sau35 in Jiangyong speech. That sound matches several Chinese words; nearby words tell readers which one is intended.

How was Nüshu used?

Women used Nüshu to write and share Jiangyong speech.

In Jiangyong County, Hunan, China, women developed Nüshu to write their local speech, adapting slender forms from Chinese characters. Many had little access to formal education in Chinese characters, and mothers taught daughters. In traditional Jiangyong use, women wrote personal histories, songs, letters, and good-wish messages delivered to a bride three days after the wedding. The earliest known artifact is a coin from China's Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state, minted between 1851–1864; its inscription says women everywhere are one family. Since 2003, workshops in Jiangyong have also taught Nüshu as cultural heritage.

At home in Jiangyong Nüshu writing; as a standalone fragment, its intended word may stay unclear without dialect and sentence context.

Alone, it does not show whether sau35 means birth, saving, kin, or an umbrella.

Why does 𛊜 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
