What 𛊰 means
Use the surrounding line: one sign can point to several words.
A Nüshu character concordance, a list of signs and their readings, gives 𛊰 the Jiangyong-dialect pronunciation pa33 and pairs it with several Chinese characters. 悲 means “sorrow”; 碑 means “inscribed stone.” Those are sound matches in Jiangyong speech, not meanings carried by the Nüshu sign.
Why did women write Nüshu?
It let local women write their speech and share stories.
With limited access to formal schooling, women in Jiangyong County, Hunan, developed Nüshu to write local speech. They used it in letters, songs, folk narratives, wedding keepsake books and embroidery.
The tradition's age is disputed; a 2021 review presents both centuries-old and much later origin theories. Nüshu evolved from Chinese character forms. Its earliest cited artifact is a bronze coin inscription from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1851–1864), whose message says women around the world are one family; the first written account appears in local records in the 1930s. Scholars brought Nüshu to wider attention in the 1980s. A UNESCO report in 2018 describes its later public role in workshops, a museum and heritage preservation, alongside its older role in personal writing.

1Why does 𛊰 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
