What 𛋩 means
It labels a syllable, not a standalone message.
Historically, similar-sounding signs could be hard to distinguish alone; hearing the spoken or sung line helped women read them in context.
Historically, Nüshu developed among women in Jiangyong County, Hunan, to write local speech; many could not write Chinese characters. Texts included poems, letters between close female friends and booklets given to brides three days after weddings. The oldest known Nüshu inscription is on a coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a Chinese rebel state (1851–64), with a message that women worldwide are one family. A county survey describes Nüshu in 1931. In 2006, China recognized Nüshu as national intangible cultural heritage.
