What 𛋪 means
It stands for the Jiangyong syllable mang13.
Words with that sound can share the sign; sentence context shows which one is meant.
Women adapted Nüshu to write local speech
Many Jiangyong women had little schooling in Chinese and adapted Chinese-character forms to write their local speech.
An inscribed coin from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a rebel state in China (1851–1864), is the oldest known artifact; a Hunan survey first documented Nüshu in 1933. Women wrote poems and songs, and gave brides “third-day letters” of good wishes three days after the wedding. Since 2003, local workshops have taught and preserved the script.
