Orange Book

6/17

📙 is the orange book emoji: a closed book with an orange cover, used for reading, studying, homework and anything bookish. The colour means nothing in particular; it is one of four coloured books that came together from Japanese phone emoji, with red, green and blue. People pick the colour that looks nicest or matches their post.

EmojiSince 2010

What 📙 means

A plain closed book, drawn with an orange cover. Most designs show a hardback seen from the front or at a slight angle, sometimes with a lighter label panel on the cover and no title. It stands for a book in the broadest sense: a novel, a textbook, a manual, a diary, the thing you are supposed to be reading for class.

It arrived in Unicode in 2010 with the first big batch of emoji converted from the Japanese mobile carriers, whose sets included several books told apart only by colour. That is the whole reason there are four of them. Nothing in the standard or in everyday use attaches a subject, mood or genre to orange, so 📙, , and are interchangeable. Writers choose by taste: orange reads as warm and autumnal, blue as calm, green as fresh, red as classic.

If you want a book that looks like it is being read, open book is the one; for a stack or a whole library, books.

What does 📙 mean when someone sends it?

Usually "book", "reading" or "studying", nothing hidden. In a chat it marks what the sender is doing or planning: "📙 all weekend" means exams or a good novel, depending on the person. Teachers and parents use it in reminders about homework and reading logs; students use it to announce, or lament, a study session.

On social media it is a favourite of readers. Book reviews, monthly reading wrap-ups and "currently reading" posts use a book emoji as a badge, and the four colours let people build a little shelf 📙) or use a different colour as the bullet for each title in a list. A book emoji next to a title is a soft recommendation: "I liked this, you might too."

The tone is friendly and practical. It carries no sarcasm, no flirtation and no warning, which is exactly why it is safe to send to a teacher, a colleague or a grandparent.

Neutral and wholesome; fine for teachers, colleagues, children and formal-ish group chats alike.

Worth knowing

  • Three of the four coloured books carry their colour in the official name; the red one is just "closed book", so searching an emoji keyboard for "red" often finds nothing while "orange" finds 📙.
  • The four books exist because Japanese phone makers drew several differently coloured books before Unicode, and Unicode kept them all rather than merge them.

Questions people ask

4

Do the book emoji colours mean different things?

No. Orange, red, green and blue books all mean "book". There is no official or widely shared code behind the colours; people choose the one that suits their post or mood.

Is 📙 a textbook or a novel?

Either. Context decides: next to exam talk it is a textbook, next to a title or a cup of coffee it is leisure reading. The drawing is a generic closed hardback.

Does it refer to a specific publication called the Orange Book?

Not in ordinary use. Several reference works carry that nickname, such as the US list of approved drugs and an older computer-security standard, and people in those fields may use 📙 for them, but everyone else just means a book.

Which book emoji should I use for reading challenges?

Any of them. is the usual choice for counting books or marking a library, for the act of reading, and 📙 or its colour siblings when you want a single book or a splash of colour.
