What ଲ means
It is the Odia la consonant, not a word by itself. Its sound is like the “l” in “lake.” Odia consonants carry an inherent vowel in ordinary spelling: bare ଲ includes it, ଲା adds a long-a vowel sign, and ଲ୍ uses hasanta, a mark that cancels the vowel.
The Odia script grew through the older Brahmi script and the Kalinga writing tradition. It developed to write Odia and other languages used in Odisha, including Sanskrit; its rounded forms suited palm-leaf writing. The earliest known inscription in the Odia language dates to 1051—a date for an inscription, not for this letter.
