What 𐒀 means
It is a letter in the Osmanya alphabet, not a complete Somali message.
Osman Yusuf Kenadid devised Osmanya around 1920–1922; the earliest published notice of the script appeared in 1932.
In early spelling, the Osmanya letter a (𐒖) followed by 𐒀 could mark a long “aa” sound, with the vowel held longer. Alef could also mark a glottal stop, a brief catch in the throat; later charts reduced or omitted that role as the spelling developed.
Why was Osmanya created?
It gave Somali a writing system shaped for the language.
Kenadid's alphabet followed earlier attempts at Arabic-based Somali spelling and competed with proposals to use Latin letters. The practical aim was to represent Somali; the wider argument was whether Somali should be written in an indigenous Somali script, Arabic script, or Latin letters.
After 1945, Osmanya moved from private correspondence into nationalist organizing and teaching. In the 1950s, it competed with Arabic and Latin alternatives; for some supporters, it represented a choice for a Somali national script. Borama and Kaddare were separate Somali-script proposals. Latin became Somalia's official orthography in 1973.
Historical and script-focused; in a sample it points to Somali writing rather than the sender's mood.
Alone, it is a letter sample, not a complete Somali message.
Drift: In 2025, a Somali-Danish cultural organization proposed extra Osmanya vowel letters and online reintroduction, while describing Latin as Somali's official script.
