osmanya letter ba

Osmanya Letter Ba

2/40

𐒁 is the Osmanya letter ba for the Somali b consonant. It was created as part of a Somali writing system and later became part of debates over Arabic, Latin, and Somali-made scripts. A message containing only 𐒁 reads like an alphabet sample or heritage reference.

What 𐒁 means

Osmanya letter ba represents the Somali b sound. In a word it contributes that consonant; alone, it is a letter sample, not a complete word. Osmanya is written from left to right.

Osman Yusuf Kenadid devised Osmanya in 1920–1922 to write Somali, offering a Somali-made alphabet alongside Arabic-based and Latin proposals. Private letters among Kenadid's circle and material prepared for a 1932 article preserve early records of the script.

Why does Osmanya have a political history?

Its public role shifted with debates over how Somali should be written. After the Second World War, the Somali Youth League promoted and taught Osmanya as a national script. Supporters could read it as indigenous Somali identity; other camps backed Arabic or Latin. Latin became official Somali orthography in the early 1970s, leaving Osmanya with historical, academic, and heritage roles.

In the 1920–1922 design, Ethiopic had no role. Borama and Kaddare were separate scripts created for Somali.

A 2025 Unicode proposal described an online effort to reintroduce Osmanya as part of Somali linguistic and cultural heritage.

Can I send 𐒁 by itself?

Only as a letter sample, not as a Somali word. In a normal chat, add Osmanya text or explain that it stands for the b sound; alone, it gives no word-level meaning to decode.

If 𐒁 appears blank or boxed, the recipient's font may lack the character. A fallback box does not change which letter the text contains.

As a lone message it is opaque; in an Osmanya lesson or heritage context, it is precise.

Do not read a lone 𐒁 as a Somali word.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐒁 show as a box?

It may be a font problem. If the font lacks an Osmanya glyph, a box or fallback symbol can appear even though the text still contains 𐒁.
