What 𐒔 means
It marks Somali /h/.
In Farta Cismaaniya, also called Far Soomaali, this sounds like h in English “hat.” Somali x is a different, deeper throat consonant.
Why was Osmanya created?
To write Somali in a script designed for its sounds.
Somali writer Cismaan Yuusuf Keenadiid devised it in 1920–1922; a scholarly notice appeared in 1932. Friends and relatives used it in private letters. After 1945, the Somali Youth League taught and promoted it as a national script, an indigenous choice amid Arabic-based and Latin proposals. A modified Latin standard was announced in 1972 and took effect in 1973.
