What 𐒕 means
YA writes y or marks long ii. Somali doubles i to show a held vowel.
Why was Osmanya created?
To write Somali in its own script. Osman Yusuf Kenadid devised Osmanya in 1920–1922. Soon after its creation, friends and relatives used it in private letters; a scholarly account described it by 1932. After the Second World War, the Somali Youth League promoted it as a national script amid debate over Arabic and Latin alternatives.
Somali Latin orthography became official in 1973. A 1977 account records Osmanya in bookkeeping and mentions published books and a biweekly journal.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𐒕 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
