What ㈨ means
It labels the ninth entry.
In Japanese and wider CJK typography—Chinese, Japanese, and Korean writing—it serves as a list marker. 九 means “nine”; ㈨ folds the parentheses around that ideograph into one character.
Why can ㈨ become (九)?
Normalization can expand it to three characters.
Unicode’s compatibility mapping gives ㈨ as the string “(九)”. This records how the forms relate in text; it does not tell us when the notation first appeared.
A document-style list marker; outside a list, it can feel like a fragment.
Sent alone, it may be read only as an unexplained “item nine.”
