What ⑨ means
It marks item nine in a numbered sequence. In a list, the circled 9 labels the ninth entry; alone, it can mark a step.
Unicode intended enclosed numbers as list bullets; many were included for compatibility with major East Asian character sets. It also treats ①–⑩ as corresponding to similar circled numerals in ITC Zapf Dingbats, a decorative symbol font.
As of 2026-10-09, Microsoft Word's font choice affects which symbols are available; typefaces can also vary ⑨'s circle weight and spacing.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ⑨ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
