What ㉂ means
The parentheses package 自; the sentence still sets its reading.
In Japanese, 自 can mean “self,” “oneself,” or “by oneself”; in Chinese constructions it can also mean “from” or “by.” Japanese dictionaries describe 自 as a picture of a nose, with pointing to one’s own nose explaining its self-reference.
㉂ packages 自 and parentheses as one typographic unit. Unicode’s parenthesized-ideograph collection draws on Japanese and Chinese character sets such as JIS X 0208 and CNS 11643, as well as company-maintained character registries. These compact forms helped preserve typographic notation when text moved between systems.
Is ㉂ the same as (自)?
They read alike, but are encoded differently.
㉂ is one character; (自) is three: a left parenthesis, 自, and a right parenthesis. Compatibility normalization, called NFKC, can expand ㉂ into that sequence.
Use ㉂ when a document or data format calls for the single-character form. Use (自) when ordinary punctuation around 自 is clearer.
Why does ㉂ look different across fonts?
The font draws its exact shape.
Fonts control the parentheses’ spacing and the strokes’ proportions, so the enclosure may look tighter or looser.
Don't confuse it with
2(自) Three ordinary characters: an opening parenthesis, 自, and a closing parenthesis. This is the compatibility equivalent of ㉂.
Questions people ask
1Why does ㉂ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
