Runic Letter Algiz Eolhx

42/89

ᛉ is a historical runic letter, conventionally used for a z-like sound, not a word with one fixed meaning. The name Algiz is reconstructed; an Old English rune poem calls its counterpart eolh-secg, a sharp marsh plant. As of 2026, modern spiritual readings coexist with far-right reuse, so context matters when it appears alone.

What ᛉ means

It began as a letter, not a fixed protection charm. In the Elder Futhark, the older 24-rune Germanic alphabet, ᛉ conventionally wrote a z-like sound near the ends of words. “Algiz” or “Elhaz” is a reconstructed label, not a name securely preserved from that period.

Runes were working letters carved into objects such as tools, weapons, jewelry, and stones. The earliest runic inscriptions date to around 150 AD; a complete row including ᛉ survives on the Kylver stone from the early 400s AD, the oldest known full Elder Futhark row.

The Old English rune poem records the name eolh-secg, usually understood as a sharp marsh plant, and describes it wounding anyone who grabs it. On St Cuthbert’s coffin in 698 AD, ᛉ stood for the X sound in a runic spelling of a short form of Christ’s name. These are letter uses, not evidence of one fixed magical meaning.

Is Algiz a protection or far-right symbol?

It can suggest either; the setting matters. As of 2026, Nazi groups’ use of the so-called Life Rune and continued neo-Nazi and white-supremacist use remain part of its public history. Non-racist neopagans also use the form, so a lone ᛉ is ambiguous.

The modern protection reading is an interpretation, not a securely established ancient translation. White-nationalist slogans, SS references, fascist imagery, or exclusionary language make the far-right reading much stronger.

In historical writing it is a letter; alone in modern art it can look spiritual or extremist.

A protection tattoo can still be read as far-right.
