What ᛊ means
It wrote the s sound and later came to evoke the sun.
Sowilo is a scholarly reconstructed name—a name pieced together from later rune traditions—for this early Germanic letter. Its basic job was to write the s sound, not to depict the sun.
Runic alphabets took regional forms. A later rune poem in Old English, an early form of English, calls the corresponding s rune Sigel and presents the sun as hope for seafarers.
The Vimose comb, an inscribed comb found in Denmark, is dated around 160 CE and is the oldest securely dated runic inscription known from the old Danish area.
Why can this rune look political?
The political reading comes from a later Nazi appropriation. In the early 1930s, the Nazi SS adopted a doubled pair of angular Sig runes as its insignia. That emblem borrowed a related runic s form; it did not redefine Sowilo's original job as a letter.
A single ᛊ in a historical or rune-related setting does not settle the sender's politics. Doubling it in an SS-style emblem or pairing it with Nazi imagery or extremist slogans makes the political reading much stronger.
Historical or sun-linked in rune contexts; politically charged when doubled in an SS-style emblem.
A doubled SS-style arrangement can read as Nazi or far-right insignia.

Questions people ask
1Why does ᛊ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
