What ᛥ means
It marks “s” followed immediately by “t.” Its Old English name, stān, means “stone”; the character represents those sounds rather than the whole word.
Futhorc was an expanded rune alphabet adapted from older Germanic runes for Old English; its runes appear on objects and in manuscripts, including Christian settings. A parchment rune row was added in an eleventh- or twelfth-century hand, placing ᛥ among letters. As of 2026, no established Anglo-Saxon fortune-telling meaning is documented.
Use it for historical futhorc references or deliberate runic design.
Do not treat protection or strength as established Anglo-Saxon meanings.

Questions people ask
1Why does ᛥ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Runic block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
