Samaritan Punctuation Anged

49/61

࠲, called anged, marks a restrained pause in Samaritan script, lighter than afsaaq. A 2008 Unicode proposal says anged is absent or infrequent in some of the oldest manuscripts.

Text symbol

What ࠲ means

It tells the reader to pause briefly, then continue.

The same 2008 Unicode proposal names afsaaq and nequdaa as the oldest Samaritan punctuation marks, suggesting that the system gained distinctions over time. It compares those older marks with Hebrew sof pasuq (׃), a mark that closes a verse in Hebrew scripture.

Questions people ask

1

Why does Samaritan anged appear as a box?

It can. A font without Samaritan punctuation coverage cannot draw it; use a Samaritan-capable font that supports right-to-left text. The box is a display failure, not a different mark.
