sharada digit three

Sharada digit three

84/96

In Sharada writing, 𑇓 stands for the quantity three. It serves as a digit in decimal numbers; later Sharada writing also appears in ritual and horoscope contexts. One quirk in the digit set: a dot marks zero, while a circle marks one.

What 𑇓 means

It marks three within Sharada numerals. In a longer number, its place determines how it contributes to the total.

Sharada numerals use decimal notation. The value of this digit stays the same; only its place in a larger number changes the total.

The set has an unusual detail: a dot represents zero, while a circle represents one. That can make its numerals look unexpected beside other Indic number systems.

How did the Sharada numeral develop?

The numeral set developed along with the Sharada script. Sharada grew from the earlier Gupta Brahmi script through Kutila, an intermediate writing style recorded in inscriptions, coins, and manuscripts. The earliest claimed record is a stone inscription at Hund dated 774–775 CE, though specialists dispute the dating of those forms. The earliest manuscript evidence is the 12th-century Bakhshali mathematical treatise.

Sharada numerals served to write quantities and calculations in texts. The script carried Sanskrit, Kashmiri, and other northern South Asian languages in inscriptions, coins, literature, science, and mathematics. In the 19th century, the use of Persian script for Kashmiri and of Devanagari expanded; Sharada receded from education and literary work toward more limited ritual and horoscope writing.

Sharada existed alongside Nagari and Proto-Bengali and later influenced Devāśeṣa and Ṭākarī, other regional writing systems. These are historical links between scripts, not connections based on appearance alone. Unicode encoded this existing digit as text; it did not create the value three.

A script-specific numeral: it contributes a number without adding social tone.

Without a Sharada-capable font, the glyph may appear as an empty box.
