Sharada Letter Bha

41/96

What 𑆨 means

Use a Sharada-aware keyboard or transliteration converter.

Try a Sharada phonetic or InScript layout; a standard keyboard has no Sharada layout by default. The open-source Satisar project documents both layouts and a transliteration converter. A font needs Sharada coverage, and the app needs shaping support when nearby letters stack.

What sound does 𑆨 make?

𑆨 is Sharada’s bha consonant, a b released with a breath.

It joins other letters inside words. Sharada builds syllables from consonants and vowel marks; its virama sign marks a consonant without the script’s default vowel.

How did the Sharada script develop?

Sharada developed from northwestern Brahmi, an early South Asian writing tradition.

The transitional stage called Proto-Śāradā appears in Gandhāra and Kashmir from the sixth–eleventh centuries CE. Birch-bark records—texts written on tree bark used as a writing surface—show the script carrying routine administration alongside religious, commemorative and literary work.

From the eighth century CE until the twentieth century, mature Sharada served as Kashmir’s main script for inscriptions and literature. Its role narrowed in the nineteenth century as Arabic-script Kashmiri and Devanagari gained ground; later manuscript and ritual use kept it in specialized settings without changing the consonant value. Sharada is historically connected with Siddham and Devanagari; Takri is described as a descendant.

A script-specific consonant, read as part of a Sharada spelling.

A matching sound does not make भ a Sharada character.

Drift: As of 2026, open-source fonts and keyboards support digital Sharada, while everyday use remains specialized. (as of as of 2026)

Why does 𑆨 appear as a box?

Your font lacks Sharada coverage. Choose a font that supports Sharada; the character is still present even when the font cannot draw it.

Is 𑆨 used in native Kashmiri?

Not in the basic native-Kashmiri letter set. Sharada spelling uses it for Sanskrit; its sound is a b released with a breath, which native Kashmiri does not use in that set.
