Shuffle Product

The shuffle product symbol ⧢ combines two sequences in every possible interleaving while keeping the order inside each input. In math, the result is written as a sum of those interleavings. Some mathematical texts use the Cyrillic letter ш for the same operation; ⧢ is a separate mathematical character.

What ⧢ means

It interleaves two sequences without changing either sequence’s internal order.

For ab and xy, possible results include abxy, axby, and xyab; every result keeps a before b and x before y. The operation adds all valid interleavings as terms. If repeated letters make different choices produce the same word, that word gets a coefficient.

A documented line of mathematical work includes shuffle maps studied by mathematicians Eilenberg and Mac Lane in 1953. Around 1954, Chen applied the structure to iterated path integrals—repeated integrals built along a path—and Ree later developed its algebraic role.

How do I type ⧢ in LaTeX?

Use LaTeX’s unicode-math package with a compatible math font.

In Unicode-aware text, enter the character directly or use the escape syntax supported by your programming language. A box means the active font lacks this glyph; in LaTeX setups without a suitable math font, define a composite operator.

Specialist notation for a formal, order-preserving product of sequences.

It does not mean arbitrary mixing: each input keeps its internal order.

Why does ⧢ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

How to type ⧢

Win+Rrun charmap for the full table, or use the emoji picker's Ω symbols tab (Win + .).
macOS
Control+Command+SpaceOpen the character viewer and search “shuffle product”.
Linux

Unicode text
Enter ⧢ directly in an editor that accepts Unicode; programming languages use different escape syntax.
