What 𑖎 means
Siddham ka is pronounced “ka” in Sanskrit, with a built-in short a.
Siddham is an abugida: each consonant carries a default vowel. A dependent vowel sign changes it; the virama removes it, and adjacent consonants can join into a cluster.
By itself, 𑖎 gives the letter reading ka, not a universal translation. A Buddhist mantra may give its syllables a special role, so the source and tradition decide what the inscription means. In Japanese Buddhist settings, Siddham is also called Bonji.
How did Siddham writing reach Buddhist traditions?
Sanskrit writing travelled with Buddhist manuscripts across Asia.
Siddham developed in India from Gupta writing, part of the Brahmi tradition. North Indian inscriptions from the 6th to about 10th century use forms called Siddhamātrikā and Kuṭila; both names refer to the script.
From the 8th century, Siddhamātrikā developed into Śāradā in Kashmir and Punjab, Proto-Bengali/Gauḍi in Bengal and Orissa, and Nāgarī elsewhere in northern India from the 10th century onwards. It served to write Sanskrit before Buddhist manuscripts carried the script east.
Buddhist monks introduced Siddham letters into translated sutras and gave them esoteric readings; Chinese Buddhist scholars studied their role in Sanskrit sound and grammar. Japanese monks carried that learning onward and conventionalized some mantra readings that differed from Sanskrit pronunciation. A Kyoto National Museum record describes a Siddham handbook by the monk Myōkaku, copied at Ninna-ji in 1151.
What should I read into a lone 𑖎?
A lone 𑖎 cannot identify one specific rite or deity.
A Buddhist reader may recognize the script’s ritual history and ask whether this syllable has a particular esoteric use; someone in an ordinary chat cannot identify the intended text or rite from this character alone. As of 2026, Siddham remains in use in Japanese Buddhist communities, especially Shingon and Tendai, for ceremonial and ritual practice. Ask for the full mantra or inscription and its tradition before assigning a meaning.
Ritual and specialist in Buddhist settings; opaque as an isolated character in ordinary chat.
Don’t name a deity or rite from this letter alone; ask for its inscription.
