SignWriting Dynamic Fast

504/672

𝧷 is the “fast” mark of Sutton SignWriting, a way of writing sign languages with pictures of hands, faces and movement. Next to a written sign it says the movement is done quickly. Sent alone it is a stray piece of notation, not an emoji for “hurry up”. Its bold angle shape is easy to mistake for the geometry angle sign .

What 𝧷 means

It tells the reader a sign's movement is quick. Sutton SignWriting writes sign languages visually: small symbols for the handshape, the face, where the hands touch the body and how they move are arranged into a little picture of each sign. Valerie Sutton built it out of DanceWriting, her 1966 notation for ballet; in 1974 researchers in Copenhagen asked her to adapt it for recording signers on video, and Deaf writers later made it their own.

How a sign moves is part of the sign, so SignWriting has a small family of “dynamics” marks for the manner of movement: 𝧷 for fast, with siblings for slow, tense, relaxed, simultaneous, alternating, every other time and gradual. A writer places the fast mark beside the movement arrows it describes.

Unicode stores each symbol as a character, but arranging symbols into the two-dimensional layout of a sign is left to SignWriting editors and fonts. Shown by itself in ordinary text, 𝧷 is just a bare angle.

Someone sent 𝧷 on its own — what does it mean?

Most likely nothing in SignWriting terms; ask the sender. One dynamics mark without a hand, face or movement says only “fast” about nothing. If the sender is not writing sign language, they probably chose it for its sharp angle look, as decoration or a stylised letter, or pasted it by accident.

Specialist notation: precise inside a written sign, meaningless on its own.

Don't read it as “hurry up” or as the math angle sign.

Is 𝧷 the angle symbol?

No. The angle sign used in geometry is . 𝧷 only looks similar; it belongs to Sutton SignWriting and math software and spellcheck treat them as different characters.

Why do I see an empty box instead?

Your font lacks the Sutton SignWriting block. Many phones and computers have no font for it, so the character shows as a box or question mark.
