signwriting hand-flat split index thumb side

SignWriting Hand-Flat Split Index, Thumb Side

98/672

𝡡 is a handshape symbol in SignWriting, a system for writing signed languages: it describes a flat hand with a split index and thumb-side detail. It records one part of a written sign; the other symbols and their two-dimensional arrangement complete the sign.

What 𝡡 means

It marks a handshape, not a complete sign. Its name describes a flat hand with a split index and thumb-side detail. In a full sign, handshapes combine with symbols for movement, location, contact, and facial or body cues; this character alone does not identify a particular sign in a signed language.

SignWriting grew from DanceWriting, a notation Valerie Sutton developed for ballet movement in 1966. In 1974, researchers at the University of Copenhagen needed a way to record signed-language movement, so Sutton adapted it. Deaf writers helped shape the system through use; the SignWriter Newspaper ran from 1981–1984 with articles written by native signers.

Why does a complete sign need more than 𝡡?

The other symbols and their layout carry the rest. SignWriting places symbols in two dimensions, so a plain character string does not specify a complete sign's arrangement. Fill and rotation modifiers adjust handshape details; movement, location, contact, and other hand or body symbols add more information.

A supporting font draws 𝡡. Without one, a box or fallback may appear; text can preserve the character without laying out a complete sign. SignWriting-aware software provides the full arrangement.

Technical: it marks a SignWriting text context.

Alone, 𝡡 identifies a handshape; it does not identify a complete sign.

Why does 𝡡 show as a box?

A font or text renderer without Sutton SignWriting support may show a box instead of the glyph. The text can still contain the character; full sign layout also needs SignWriting-aware software.
