What 𝡥 means
It combines with other marks to record a signed expression. The split is on the little-finger side of the hand, between the little and ring fingers. The angular outline is a schematic handshape, not a drawing of a damaged hand.
SignWriting records what the hands, face and body do. Its symbols are arranged in two-dimensional groups: hand orientation, position, movement, contact and facial expression can all contribute to the reading. The arrangement matters, so a string of isolated characters does not necessarily preserve a written sign.
Valerie Sutton developed SignWriting in 1974 after sign-language researchers at the University of Copenhagen asked her to adapt her dance-notation system, DanceWriting. It allows signed languages to be written directly, rather than first translated into a spoken language.

1Questions people ask
1Does this handshape mean the same thing in every sign language?
No. Sign languages are distinct languages. A handshape difference can distinguish signs in one language but be a variation without a change of meaning in another. No single sign language uses the entire SignWriting symbol inventory.
